I started to get my shit together during what is now the fifth week of being locked in a box my home and getting all my online stuff in order.

The idea was to use a pretty good domain I found on backorder, ynn.org, getting a three-letter .org would have been the masterpiece, but instead some dipshit domain guru auction site got it. So it’ll never be available again, forever full of ads to buy it which nobody ever will.

But I digress, after reeling in from my perceived loss of the situation, I got my brain working. Granted it didn’t work well, since one of my ideas was Downtown. Yes, I now own dtne.org because that made a lot of sense.

I got thinking again, later, looking for a few combos, then I started to link things, and looked for uldl, upload download. To be fair in the early 90s I used to do more D/L than U/L, but it read right and uldl.org was available. I renamed my WordPress from it’s temporary name Project X (pjx.mmn.on.ca) which it turns out you don’t do that because it fucks everything up. A few rules in CloudFlare later, it’s somewhat fixed but still not quite working with my S3 upload system.

I started to move my domains over, I imported my huge post history from lj.gl to this new WordPress Multisite install at uldl.org, asked the gods at Jetpack to move over the subscription and voilà we’re here now.

Using the redirect plugin for WP over at lj.gl I’ve got everything redirecting. There are still some issues, since WP crashed out if I tried to import the media library, which is irrelevant anyways since all the images still live in the same Object space, but WP doesn’t give a shit and broke all the images for the lolz. There also seems to be a loss of about one thousand articles, somewhere, no idea what since the import was successful, but as I find them I’ll bring them over by hand.

After this cacophonie of hell was completed I’ve started moving in other sites, I’m kind of halfway through bbs.ec, I got phlog.bbs.ec over with no problems at all. The decision on that, was to move it into this journal rather than being its own thing. Which makes sense, since I want to control more where I post things.

Although all the other network sites have their own blog parts, I keep my various personal posts at journal.uldl.org mirrored with my Dreamwidth and LiveJournal and the other stuff that is more related to the « not really a personal post thing » I put in the uldl.org news section. I’m also working on a better menu system to fluidly switch between the networked sites. There will be some weird-ass shit for a while, no lies.

Some of the other good things about this arsery is that this site is hosted on a dedicated server with DreamHost, so it’s more reliable than the previous place I hosted lj.gl. I also have centralised where I keep all the contact forms to uldl.org directly, so I don’t have to piss around with too much nonsense.

I’m heading back to the grindstone on this one to finish off bbs.ec and drop in the redirections.

This was also posted to AQ.SB.

In the spirit of Spring Cleaning and the shut-in effect of the quarantine kicking in hard, I decided to do a few things.

It started off with cleaning out the air conditioner (spoiler : never do this) and it ended with a plan on securing up my domains.

Having had mmn.on.ca since the late 90s, spammers do try and forge the domain. Granted since 2018 I’ve had the DMARC policy set to quarantine (lol) and it seemed to have helped from seeing the DMARC reports but with all this COVID-19 SPAM I decided to do my part to prevent bullshit from propagating (and no, no matter what Karen from YouTube says, 5G does not propagate or cause COVID-19.)

I have my next set of core domains to be set to the reject policy very soon.

Right now mmn.on.ca has a pretty good score on deliverability on internet.nl at 87% (not having IPv6 mail servers does kick you down a bit, and ProtonMail hasn’t yet phased out some of the older TLS stock.

Previously I wasn’t able to have DNSSEC with my previous and long time registrar MyID.ca so I had to move it to a new one not long ago so I could implement that. I’ve also got to reimplement HSTS, but that’s a job for another day.

Considering I have not much else to be doing here, you know, cuerentena, I figured I’d take some time out of my seriously busy day to write something about, well, anything at this point.

I took some time to start grabbing images off my phone, and updating some of my photo albums over at bbs.yt. One of the ones I did was the photos I took in Oslo, a very short-lived trip thanks to our friend Rona.

I’ve also been spicing up Miss Kaja’s garden in the evenings with a few candles here and there. She’s spending all her time out there as it’s quite warm, it’s very quiet, and she’s getting fed up of my existence in her space 24/7.

I’m still considering moving where this site is hosted, the server it’s on is rather slow, but then again WordPress is bloated so who knows. It probably won’t work out well regardless. Maybe I’ll check out DreamPress but it’s kind of expensive for a little blog that gets more SPAM than visitors. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Otherwise, I got a Kindle, it seemed like a good idea considering that there is only so much of trying to find shit on Farcebook and YouTube to read and watch. It’s worked out, I’ve gone through two books and started a couple of new ones.

I kind of started 1984 in French, I’ve seen the film but never read the book. Figured I probably should after all, but the one I’m getting into now is Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson, I’ve previously read her first book many moons ago, but also not that many days ago.

I also during this lockdown got Disney+ and blitzed through Season 30 of The Simpsons. It wasn’t that bad.

What wonderful news, I can hear my inner 17-year-old self say. After losing my personal domain nrg-online.ca back in the early 2000s to the horrid Michael “Mikey” Yack from FerberleursSabings.com I managed to get it back.

Granted it took many years, but it’s the principle of it all. What do I plan on doing with it ? No idea, maybe make a homage to how much I detest Mikey Yack, but I already did that for a while on mmn.on.ca.

While it’s not a massive victory, by literally any stretch of the imagination, it’s kind of the same feeling I got when I managed to get MrMan.NET on a domain auction from Dynadot in 2014.

Let’s see all the old accounts I still have attached to my old email address now…

In France we are now kept inside our homes and only let out for specific reasons, obviously this is for the greater good.

But when you can’t go do a thing you realise that being at home is quite boring. Don’t get me wrong, after a long week hiding for an entire Saturday is pretty exhilarating, but being at home for what will be a week as of tomorrow night is rather boring.

For a while I had work to keep me occupied all day, but now our hours have been temporarily reduced, so filling my time with activities, is well, trying. In fact, my cat now hates me for existing in her space.

But it also means I can do other things I really should have been doing for some time now, like working on my BBS, expanding my web presence, buying a shit tonne of domains, and doing up my gopherhole.

So far, I updated a single page on gopher.is, so we there, in the grove.

mmn: (Default)

I found out about MarsEdit from micro.blog (which you’ll also find a Twitter-esque style micro blog at mmn.on.ca), so I’m literally just testing if it works.

I seem to have some issues with external clients with LJ.GL, thus one must try.

mmn: (I HAS HAT)

I’m moving in to the world of micro.blog since I’ve got the Twatter and the Mastodon on the go. It seems reasonable to also be able to hold on to my own content (see that time I did it with LiveJournal by accident), albeit third-party hosted.

In the process of migrating, I repointed mmn.on.ca over to my micro.blog site and with HSTS switched on, it did not appreciate that at all.

All one can do is wait for the cert to be issued and my long-time domain will be doing something on it’s own again (I recently had it repointed to ec.je cos I ran out of ideas).

mmn: (I HAS HAT)

One of my favourite past times is doing updates and breaking shit. If anything it is the pinnacle of running any web app. Why wait for a h4x0r to take you down, when you can DIY.

BBS.yt is an installation of Chevereto that runs on DreamHost, since my one of my cloud storage spaces is DreamObjects, and Chevereto happily will use that to dump my pix in without any issues. Which is great since it’s better than dumping pix on Google.

A couple days ago I get a notification that Chevereto is needing an update, not a problem, click a link and let it do its thing. Except this time, dumb ass did it on his phone.

This is a bad idea since it timed out and spanked everything to a white screen hell. Not my best moment, but there you go, it happened. It took me another couple days to remember I shagged it completely and trying to figure out how to undo the mess I made.

Which is precisely what happened today, thankfully it was a success and now BBS.yt lives for another day.

As you can probably tell from the absolute boringness of this particular post, I’m aiming to do more journal writing (hem blogging) this year to improve my SEO Influencer rating to be less boring.

For a while now I’ve been running some old school servers, very text-based things like the famous BBS, but I’ve also more recently got into running a Gopher server.

If you don’t know what Gopher is, well, you’re in for a treat :

The Gopher protocol is a communications protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents in Internet Protocol networks. The design of the Gopher protocol and user interface is menu-driven, and presented an alternative to the World Wide Web in its early stages, but ultimately fell into disfavor, yielding to the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). The Gopher ecosystem is often regarded as the effective predecessor of the World Wide Web.

Wikipedia

I always find it hard to run a service like this, since I host my domains using CloudFlare to filter out bots and shit that cause problems. Unfortunately it also means that I block non-standard ports at the root level in the process.

But I managed to find a domain that worked out well for this – gopher.is – which is only available via the Gopher protocol, to access it you’ll need a Gopher client or a Gopher web proxy. It’s the ultimate in text-only experience and from my end, a very lightweight server to run.

The recent election is what we all kind of expected, Brexit was just the test the Conservatives to see how much lying they could get away with and still manage a win. If anything the cover photo says it all, in BoJo’s riding they had a choice of a bunch of fucking clowns and a labour candidate, they went for the biggest clown they could find. 👏

Then we have the bizarre world of « I can’t really stand Corbyn, so I voted Con » lot, which in itself is counterproductive, but hey, you do you.

Either way, I’m not going to dedicate an entire post to this consortium of shit fuckery, because I’d just be repeating what everybody else has been saying and that clearly falls on deaf ears. That and some bot will probably start attacking my blog, the usual things that happen when people don’t agree with you online. 🤷‍♂️

Side note : Grammarly seems to think this post is « optimistic », I think your AI is fucked chaps.

Rentre Avec Tes Pieds (RATP)

In actual optimistic news though, other than the Great Strike of 2019 griding France to a halt, I have got an upgrade on my internet. 10GB fibre, which has been so amazing. Granted I didn’t realise you had to request a specific IP type from my provider and I panicked a little when my Freebox started to refuse to let me use certain ports. But it was pretty easy to fix, it seems like a pretty solid security patch for those who have no idea what they’re doing from causing havoc in the IP range.

Another update on the news front is that oddly enough I managed to grab I domain I didn’t expect, I was trying to register something else, but Autocorrect did its thing. I went through the checkout and setup without even clocking it.

So here I am right now the proud owner of eu.sb 🇪🇺😂 I can’t say that I’m upset about this moment, but it for once autocorrect didn’t duck something up badly.

Yesterday I finally got most of my adulting things out of the way, getting keys copied, a hair cut, followed by giving up going to the shop and ordering food online. I feel that this could have been the top point of being an adult, I have peaked everybody. Incidentally, I had a bit of a shock when I realised I’m 2 years older than I remembered. Oops.

I guess I’ll finalise this post off with a shameless ad.

bbs.yt, ec.gy, frankenserver.eu, mono.mx, uun.nz, and zigs.eu are being shared via Free DNS, a dynamic DNS domain sharing project where members can setup, and administrate their DNS entries on their own remote internet-connected systems in real-time. You can register your own subdomains at ec.je/public/freedns/default.wct.

Also, if anybody actually still reads this blog I’d be interested if you dropped a comment in the comments, I might put it on my life plan to update more often if there are still lurkers.

mmn: (St Jade of Goodie)

It’s been a wild ride up to this point in 2019, everything that’s happening in the US, the UK turning in to whateverthefuckthisis, and some changes to my BBS.

Obviously, the latter is less hectic than the others.

In a sleep filled shopping rage, I managed to find that a) I can register .ec domains and 2) one domain in particular was available.

Ever since I took mmn.on.ca off the BBS, it’s been a void of what should be the domain attached to it. I went through a few phases, mmn.ec.je, mrman.ca, mail.ec.je and none really had the oomph I wanted. I also considered bbs.ec.je, but I was a touch on the fence with that one.

But when I saw that bbs.ec was available, well it seemed right and I got it (I also got back bbs.paris and mmn.quebec at the same time but lost kevin.paris, hey ho).

I spent a lot of time working on changing bits and bobs around in the ANSI screens, adding some additional QWK networks, and other touch ups. Outside of that I also picked up another domain name to share with the FreeDNS communityec.gy, plus some changes on the backend of the BBS which I posted in Announce (about VPNs, TLS, and all other fun).

In real world news, today after being hit hard on the Socials(tm) about the constant bullshittery the Tory Brexit Trolls and Nigel « I don’t show up to work, so you don’t get a voice in the EU parlament » Farage have been up to, I got my voting ballot.

While it would be wrong (and illegal mind) for me to indicate my vote at this moment, I can assure you I did X that shit with vigour.

Beyond that I did have some issues with Jetpack and WordPress recently, so I might have to swap what is hosted in Sweden and in Germany in the coming weeks.

mmn: (I HAS HAT)

Because it’s the weekend and I have some free time, I set up a news server for the BBS to give a bit more control of what gets pulled in.

I’m using some old school tech on this one, the old laptop that MMN used to run off, my Freebox, Hamster Playground and NewsProxy.

The feeds are pulled off two different servers depending on
availability, my ISP’s USENET server and AIOE. I will also get the
stats uploaded automatically at some point, but for the moment it’s a manual task. You can find the server stats here :

https://www.welford-costelloe.com/news/

Let me know as usual if you would like a feed or run in to any problems.

My blog to the left and my TorFree email to the right.

Having been without a solid form of connection to the internet for the past while, I’ve realised the need to get one.  Seeing as I am currently lacking a CB means my iPhone is subject to constant disconnection for lack of payment.  Obviously this is a problem, but I figured that instructing a prélèvement to occur would some how make it be.

Clearly that is never the case and I will continue to receive arsy text messages about non-payment before my payment date for the forseeable future.

However, I digress.  Having previously battled SFR I decided it was best to select my own service provider, forgetting completely that France Télécom is always looming in a deep dark corner to ruin your day.  And with efficiency they did just that.

The first appointment was only available about two weeks after I signed up, I started to receive random calls from nmbers you just can’t call back at awkward times demanding the name of the last person who held a line in the flat.  As I completely skipped names on the convienent drop down list of people I will never know personally to ask, I assumed it would be obvious that this information, much like the Glorious Leader Kim Jung-Il is dead and gone.  But of course the calls still came and I could never talk to them.

When the day arrived, I was jubilant in the knowledge I could soon be streaming hardcore pornography from Tumblr in no time.  That excitement soon died, when it transpired there is a locked room where FT keep the entire building’s wiring and nobody had a key.  These things happen of course, but having to pay 5€ for a phone call to rearrange, well that’s just mean.

My next appointment was equally as distant as the first and convienently placed between the hours of 8am and 10am.  Fairly bog standard for your office worker, but for I, a night bar worker, it might as well be in the middle of the night.

But I wait and see, perhaps the gates of Tumblr Titallation aren’t that far off.

I have discovered why toronto.mmn.on.ca dropped off the face of the earth with no warning at all.  It turns out this is down to Dyn.com being what can only be described as douchebags.

They have changed how their free accounts work and hadn’t bothered informing me about it, which I’m cool with, because you know, although I’m not paying I’d still expect to be treated like a customer.  Seeing as I was interested in their premium services for the BBS, I can certainly say I’m not now.

I have now put some factors in place to avoid this, namely cutting down on the CNAME use direct to the dynamic ip service I’m now using (updating that many records was not fun), I will also be setting up some kind of ping service and will soon set-up a status page for the servers for an eye view of the network and not putting all my eggs in to the same basket.

My router supports more than one dynamic ip service, so I will have another running off the router with a more reliable service to fall back on if there is a late update from the one I’m on now (I can’t see that happening though, they are reliable and it’s triggered by GATEWAY/AfriNET at the moment).

The moral of this story is, don’t use Dyn.com.  #JustSayin

Today we are talking to a crane and a bridge. This may seem slightly mental to you, but now that Hello Lamp Post has super charged the pulse of the urban environment with the ability to speak; it doesn’t seem so mad now.

I took the opportunity to interview a crane and a bridge.

Hello crane #32

Hello, human. All over Bristol objects like me are waking up and asking people about the city. I have a few questions for you. If you were as tall as me, what would you do?

I would sway in the wind like a sleeping Godzilla.

Thanks, short stuff. Someone else told me: ‘Lord over everything’ Another question for you. I can’t see you. Where are you standing?

I am peering over the bridge at your marvel.

Ah, now I see you. Give me a wave. Someone else told me: ‘I’m in the car on my way home now’ Here’s another question. Can you see the Balmoral? She’s a beautiful ship.

I can’t dear crane, for I am blind.

Interesting. I’ll let you go but check other objects for existing codes – almost anything can talk! Want to know why objects like me are waking up? …

That crazy crane was talking mental sticks, but that filthy bridge, well that’s another tale. Dirty bridge said…

I see. Someone else told me: ‘That depends on where you’re swimming.’ I have another question. How about a nice game of Poohsticks?

Yes, it wanted to play with Poo(h). Filthy! CALL THE DAILY MAIL!

mmn: (Default)

I will be making a number of changes to the MMN website over the coming weeks.  This stems from the problems I had with the BBS machine when I was away in Paris in May.

I noticed that between the home broadband connection and the traffic GATEWAY was taking to handle non-BBS requests, it was best to move that machine away from the main domain and split it off.

This does not mean anything will change with the BBS, which is at the heart of what MMN has always been.  The email domain will still be @mmn.on.ca and telnet/wcNav will still be on bbs.mmn.on.ca.  The only change is the support portal/HTML interface website which is now on toronto.mmn.on.ca.

Why toronto.mmn.on.ca?  Because I am moving “back to where it all started”.  When MMN was first set-up I created it on the only domain I had access to at the time mmn.toronto.on.ca.  A year or so later I was able to become a Sole Proprietorship at the Provincial level allowing me access to mmn.on.ca.

When CIRA/AECI took over the .ca name space I made the mistake of not taking mmn.toronto.on.ca forward, so this is my hommage to that error.

Since moving away from our VPN’d IP address Jabber has been moved to the sub-domain @im.mmn.on.ca so there is unlikely to have any concequence of service disruptions in this change.

What will be happening to mmn.on.ca?  It will now be a cross between a portal site, my personal site and a project site.  I have invested seventeen years in to MMN and mmn.on.ca since I started it back in 1996; and I have always meant to merge my personal projects in to the MMN name.

What about the Twitter account @mmnI will be trying to move or at least mirror my personal account over to this; much to the displeasure of whomever is constantly requesting password changes.  It’s still not for you!

What about your LiveJournal?  Nothing changes there, mmn.on.ca/blog cross posts there and I’m still active on the LiveJournal community.

I have questions!  QUESTIONSQUESTIONSQUESTIONS!  Don’t we all, but no matter you can email me here (select CS from the drop down) and I’ll come back to you; or leave a comment on my LJ post.
