I started to get my shit together during what is now the fifth week of being locked in a box my home and getting all my online stuff in order.

The idea was to use a pretty good domain I found on backorder, ynn.org, getting a three-letter .org would have been the masterpiece, but instead some dipshit domain guru auction site got it. So it’ll never be available again, forever full of ads to buy it which nobody ever will.

But I digress, after reeling in from my perceived loss of the situation, I got my brain working. Granted it didn’t work well, since one of my ideas was Downtown. Yes, I now own dtne.org because that made a lot of sense.

I got thinking again, later, looking for a few combos, then I started to link things, and looked for uldl, upload download. To be fair in the early 90s I used to do more D/L than U/L, but it read right and uldl.org was available. I renamed my WordPress from it’s temporary name Project X (pjx.mmn.on.ca) which it turns out you don’t do that because it fucks everything up. A few rules in CloudFlare later, it’s somewhat fixed but still not quite working with my S3 upload system.

I started to move my domains over, I imported my huge post history from lj.gl to this new WordPress Multisite install at uldl.org, asked the gods at Jetpack to move over the subscription and voilà we’re here now.

Using the redirect plugin for WP over at lj.gl I’ve got everything redirecting. There are still some issues, since WP crashed out if I tried to import the media library, which is irrelevant anyways since all the images still live in the same Object space, but WP doesn’t give a shit and broke all the images for the lolz. There also seems to be a loss of about one thousand articles, somewhere, no idea what since the import was successful, but as I find them I’ll bring them over by hand.

After this cacophonie of hell was completed I’ve started moving in other sites, I’m kind of halfway through bbs.ec, I got phlog.bbs.ec over with no problems at all. The decision on that, was to move it into this journal rather than being its own thing. Which makes sense, since I want to control more where I post things.

Although all the other network sites have their own blog parts, I keep my various personal posts at journal.uldl.org mirrored with my Dreamwidth and LiveJournal and the other stuff that is more related to the « not really a personal post thing » I put in the uldl.org news section. I’m also working on a better menu system to fluidly switch between the networked sites. There will be some weird-ass shit for a while, no lies.

Some of the other good things about this arsery is that this site is hosted on a dedicated server with DreamHost, so it’s more reliable than the previous place I hosted lj.gl. I also have centralised where I keep all the contact forms to uldl.org directly, so I don’t have to piss around with too much nonsense.

I’m heading back to the grindstone on this one to finish off bbs.ec and drop in the redirections.

Considering I have not much else to be doing here, you know, cuerentena, I figured I’d take some time out of my seriously busy day to write something about, well, anything at this point.

I took some time to start grabbing images off my phone, and updating some of my photo albums over at bbs.yt. One of the ones I did was the photos I took in Oslo, a very short-lived trip thanks to our friend Rona.

I’ve also been spicing up Miss Kaja’s garden in the evenings with a few candles here and there. She’s spending all her time out there as it’s quite warm, it’s very quiet, and she’s getting fed up of my existence in her space 24/7.

I’m still considering moving where this site is hosted, the server it’s on is rather slow, but then again WordPress is bloated so who knows. It probably won’t work out well regardless. Maybe I’ll check out DreamPress but it’s kind of expensive for a little blog that gets more SPAM than visitors. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Otherwise, I got a Kindle, it seemed like a good idea considering that there is only so much of trying to find shit on Farcebook and YouTube to read and watch. It’s worked out, I’ve gone through two books and started a couple of new ones.

I kind of started 1984 in French, I’ve seen the film but never read the book. Figured I probably should after all, but the one I’m getting into now is Midnight Robber by Nalo Hopkinson, I’ve previously read her first book many moons ago, but also not that many days ago.

I also during this lockdown got Disney+ and blitzed through Season 30 of The Simpsons. It wasn’t that bad.

The recent election is what we all kind of expected, Brexit was just the test the Conservatives to see how much lying they could get away with and still manage a win. If anything the cover photo says it all, in BoJo’s riding they had a choice of a bunch of fucking clowns and a labour candidate, they went for the biggest clown they could find. 👏

Then we have the bizarre world of « I can’t really stand Corbyn, so I voted Con » lot, which in itself is counterproductive, but hey, you do you.

Either way, I’m not going to dedicate an entire post to this consortium of shit fuckery, because I’d just be repeating what everybody else has been saying and that clearly falls on deaf ears. That and some bot will probably start attacking my blog, the usual things that happen when people don’t agree with you online. 🤷‍♂️

Side note : Grammarly seems to think this post is « optimistic », I think your AI is fucked chaps.

Rentre Avec Tes Pieds (RATP)

In actual optimistic news though, other than the Great Strike of 2019 griding France to a halt, I have got an upgrade on my internet. 10GB fibre, which has been so amazing. Granted I didn’t realise you had to request a specific IP type from my provider and I panicked a little when my Freebox started to refuse to let me use certain ports. But it was pretty easy to fix, it seems like a pretty solid security patch for those who have no idea what they’re doing from causing havoc in the IP range.

Another update on the news front is that oddly enough I managed to grab I domain I didn’t expect, I was trying to register something else, but Autocorrect did its thing. I went through the checkout and setup without even clocking it.

So here I am right now the proud owner of eu.sb 🇪🇺😂 I can’t say that I’m upset about this moment, but it for once autocorrect didn’t duck something up badly.

Yesterday I finally got most of my adulting things out of the way, getting keys copied, a hair cut, followed by giving up going to the shop and ordering food online. I feel that this could have been the top point of being an adult, I have peaked everybody. Incidentally, I had a bit of a shock when I realised I’m 2 years older than I remembered. Oops.

I guess I’ll finalise this post off with a shameless ad.

bbs.yt, ec.gy, frankenserver.eu, mono.mx, uun.nz, and zigs.eu are being shared via Free DNS, a dynamic DNS domain sharing project where members can setup, and administrate their DNS entries on their own remote internet-connected systems in real-time. You can register your own subdomains at ec.je/public/freedns/default.wct.

Also, if anybody actually still reads this blog I’d be interested if you dropped a comment in the comments, I might put it on my life plan to update more often if there are still lurkers.

It’s been a wild ride up to this point in 2019, everything that’s happening in the US, the UK turning in to whateverthefuckthisis, and some changes to my BBS.

Obviously, the latter is less hectic than the others.

In a sleep filled shopping rage, I managed to find that a) I can register .ec domains and 2) one domain in particular was available.

Ever since I took mmn.on.ca off the BBS, it’s been a void of what should be the domain attached to it. I went through a few phases, mmn.ec.je, mrman.ca, mail.ec.je and none really had the oomph I wanted. I also considered bbs.ec.je, but I was a touch on the fence with that one.

But when I saw that bbs.ec was available, well it seemed right and I got it (I also got back bbs.paris and mmn.quebec at the same time but lost kevin.paris, hey ho).

I spent a lot of time working on changing bits and bobs around in the ANSI screens, adding some additional QWK networks, and other touch ups. Outside of that I also picked up another domain name to share with the FreeDNS communityec.gy, plus some changes on the backend of the BBS which I posted in Announce (about VPNs, TLS, and all other fun).

In real world news, today after being hit hard on the Socials(tm) about the constant bullshittery the Tory Brexit Trolls and Nigel « I don’t show up to work, so you don’t get a voice in the EU parlament » Farage have been up to, I got my voting ballot.

While it would be wrong (and illegal mind) for me to indicate my vote at this moment, I can assure you I did X that shit with vigour.

Beyond that I did have some issues with Jetpack and WordPress recently, so I might have to swap what is hosted in Sweden and in Germany in the coming weeks.

Literally me, right now

I have managed to do two things in the last twenty four hours that I have been wanting to do forevers.

The first being, after many years of wanting to run my own version of the LiveJournal code, I finally got my shit together to do so. Granted, since LiveJournal has since dropped off the open source circuit, it’s a Dreamwidth install. But it’s forked off LiveJournal’s code.

I have been diddling on and off with Nanoblogger for some time, if you don’t know what it is, it’s basically a blogging platform that works on Bash.

It’s unfortunately gone out of development as of 2013, but if you have the patience to work with it, I can assure you that it is actually quite flexible.

Plus you get the joy of beating something in to submission at the command line level.I’ve put my BBS website in to production using Nanoblogger which makes handling the site easier to move around since it’s all flat files, plus if I need to make a code update then I can just modify one file, push an update and we there. No databases, no script issues, just nice flat files.

One of the things I have mentioned before is that I want to bring my data in house, because you never know if a service is going to fall down, which we have seen a number of sites fall down and take a few years of work with them.

For my blogging, I’ve started to use WordPress as it was simplier to import a bulk load of old entries over, with the exception of course, being LiveJournal since the API has gone all wonky #sadface. But I’m trying to push things out on to not only my personal blogs, but dump them in another Nanoblogger install on Teleport.

One of the thing that held me back with Nanoblogger was that commenting isn’t as easy to do, but I’m not really saying I get a lot (if any) comments on my posts, but it’s nice to have around.

So this morning, I worked with Disqus on the Teleport website, turns out that was pretty easy to get going. Now I have to work out which content to drag across, I’m not really going to put it as one of my main websites, but having an archive of various things I’ve done is pretty cool. Considering that at the moment, it’s LiveJournal that holds 18 years of my internet mumblings.

I’m currently up all night due to last weeks great effects of la grippe, with my sleep patterns completely gone crazy, I figured a good long haul to the evening will fix things up.

To do this, I of course must be busy doing things, and things in this case is making sense of my various websites and my web presences.  I think I went totally OTT at one point since, there like be hundreds.

One of them which is going to come offline is vx.sg, it was the precurser to this blog.  My first use of Ghost as a blogging platform, don’t get me wrong, Ghost is pretty good.  But it lacks easy configuration, it was worth it to get my hands on it, but a pain to keep running.  There is of course also the fact it’s hosted on a DreamCompute instance which I no longer hold SSH keys for.  I will of course be keeping this domain, I have a fondness of it in the same sense as my other short ones #ILikeShortDomains.  I’m becoming a real fan of simplicity, I do love something complex to get my hands on, understand and discover, but in the long term those kind of projects I tend to abandon, since I don’t really have enough time to give them the care they deserve.

The next one to kind of start, is Signal Earth, this was a really good idea in my sleep deprived nostalgic mind.  I used to have a trashy AngelFire account which I posted all my young Alien related things, being a creative type, I used to create things out of plasticine take photos, scan them (as were the days) and create storylines.

This I really should have never got out of, it was fun, got me outside and even if nobody read any of it, I made it with my hands.  So since thar be a WordPress, I think this will fit in well with it’s own category.   Perhaps even throwing up the pics on nbcam.

Also on the new block, retrowa.re, I have an affinity for classic computing, it’s my main jam and I still run a BBS after all.  I want to get some of my classic games up on the BBS and file them in to various reviews.  I have a huge collection of Commodore 64 games, all on tape which would be amazing to save.  How I am going to present the BBS things, I do not know just yet.  I may possibly run another WordPress instance, but I will need to consider this heavily, as one too many of the same thing is pointless.

Speaking of the BBS, I’m considering bringing this up on to this site, it’s fitting I think.  But we shall see over the coming hours how this works out.

mmn: (Default)

After having a tiny bit of time to myself today, I used this time somewhat wisely between watching films and working on the 21 year on going project that is my BBS.

Concerningly, it is actually 21 years old and that terrifies the shit out of me.  Sans déc.

But the leg work of trying to keep it all in one place has finally been done, I’ve cleaned up the web server on the BBS, redirected domains and started to put together the content on to this site to get it more or less functional.  More pressing is that I finally got the SSL certificate installed from StartCom.

I’m in two minds as I really don’t want to lose the current style of the BBS website, because god knows it has been like that forever, but I think I can still keep it around but in a more up-to-date model (here on ec.je) and the classic theme for the actual private BBS areas.

Because one thing I have noticed is that the web site is stale content wise and not great to update, unless in front of a computer.  There is also the whole needing to consolidate everything on to ec.je just for my sanity.

Once I can get that fully wrapped up, then I can move back to the more technical aspects, such as keeping dial-up access up, the backend mail servers, finding a way to keep the intra-servers VPN more stable and finally updating the ANSI screens.

Project wise I seem to overwhelm myself a little considering that I don’t have a whole lot of extra time to myself, but I press on.  Because when you invest 21 years, it’s probably something you enjoy.

Also available on ec.je.

I set up a blog on my personal homepage a while back, however, I some how managed to crap it out completely.

So here I am sleepless again (with an early start) playing around with another WordPress installation. It seems stable, but I haven’t yet the heart to move it across.

The Out of Memory error is still freshly burnt in to my soul.

With all that has happened so far, I’m glad to report this is perhaps the least interesting drama I can come up with.

I think I’ll fiddle some more and write something actually interesting.

I have now successfully set-up my Wordpress blog and now it’s crossposting to LJ in theory, so in fact, one could determine this is a test post, no?

Dear LiveJournal,

I’m about to import all my old posts because after deleting and reinstalling this blog I finally got LJ CrossPost to work, so er, I might double up on all my posts for the last two years :s
